AAUW Lobby Corps

AAUW Action Fund Capitol Hill Lobby Corps is the front line of AAUW’s public policy. These member volunteers

  • fight for gender equity in education
  • champion moderate jurists for federal courts
  • support measures to improve economic security.

Until the pandemic required the suspension of visits, every Thursday that Congress was in session Lobby Corps members would receive comprehensive training as well as briefings on that week’s lobbying priority. They then proceeded to selected congressional offices to educate policy makers. Members made more than 1200 visits each congressional session until the pandemic forced suspension of the program.

Lobby Day in Richmond

In January of each year AAUW members from around Virginia  meet in Richmond to talk to our state senators and delegates on key issues.

This year AAUW of Virginia will hold its annual Virginia Lobby Day in Richmond on January 31, 2024. This is an opportunity to put AAUW priorities in front of our state legislators in person. In addition, AAUW-VA will have a reception for women legislators on January 30, and we are invited to attend. November 30, 2023, Was Native Women’s Equal Pay Day

The pay gap tends to be larger for women of color and in some cases the gap appears to be widening. Compared to white, non-Hispanic men,  Native women make 59 cents on the dollar. The Equal Pay Day Calendar now encompasses a broader cross-section of women, including those who work part-time or seasonally, to represent a more accurate picture of how the gender pay gap impacts diverse communities. The COVID-19 pandemic pushed many women, especially women of color, into part-time or seasonal work, or out of the workforce all together. With the new inclusive methodology, we can advocate on behalf of all women in the workforce.
